Kwankwaso’s Alleged Power Grab in NNPP Sparks Backlash from Party Founder
Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, the founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has spoken out against Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasaya Movement’s alleged attempt to seize control of the party apparatus, labeling it a betrayal of trust.
Addressing the media at a press conference in Lagos on Friday, Aniebonam accused Kwankwaso of undermining the party’s integrity and disregarding its founding principles.
According to Aniebonam, he personally extended the NNPP’s platform to Kwankwaso in a bid to support his political aspirations, including his presidential ambitions. He recounted how Kwankwaso, alongside a delegation led by Buba Galadima, Prof. Sam Angai, and Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi, approached him seeking the NNPP’s support for Kwankwaso’s presidential bid in the 2023 elections.

However, Aniebonam expressed dismay at Kwankwaso’s subsequent actions, alleging that the senator had unilaterally made significant changes to the party’s structure without proper consultation. Aniebonam accused Kwankwaso of tampering with the NNPP’s flag, logo, and constitution, undermining the party’s foundational values.
Asserting his authority as the party’s founder and former chairman, Aniebonam condemned Kwankwaso’s alleged power grab, emphasizing that the senator’s actions were detrimental to the party’s cohesion and integrity. He reminded Kwankwaso and his allies that they had been expelled from the party for engaging in anti-party activities.
Aniebonam underscored the importance of adhering to the NNPP’s constitution in resolving internal disputes, citing a recent Federal High Court ruling declaring the party’s convention illegal. He expressed readiness to pursue legal avenues, including seeking recourse from the Supreme Court, to uphold the party’s constitution and restore order.
In conclusion, Aniebonam made it clear that even if Kwankwaso were to be pardoned, he would no longer be eligible to run as the NNPP’s sole candidate, signaling a decisive stance against the senator’s alleged bid for control.
