A faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), led by Major Agbo, has expelled Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate, over allegations of anti-party activities and misappropriation of campaign funds.
The decision was announced by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq.
The faction had previously vowed to investigate Kwankwaso and his loyalists for allegedly misappropriating over N1 billion generated from the sale of nomination forms. Despite being invited to defend himself before the disciplinary panel, Kwankwaso reportedly failed to appear, leading to his expulsion.

Abdulrasaq stated that Kwankwaso’s expulsion was carried out in accordance with the provisions of the party’s 2022 constitution as amended. He also mentioned that the former presidential candidate would be reported to the appropriate authorities to answer questions regarding financial impropriety related to the mismanagement of public funds.
However, an ally of Kwankwaso and the National Auditor of NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, disputed the expulsion, stating that Major Agbo’s faction did not have the authority to dismiss the former governor. Johnson claimed that Kwankwaso’s relationship with the National Working Committee of NNPP was intact at the national headquarters in Abuja and suggested that the faction should form its own party or take the matter to court.
The expulsion of Kwankwaso underscores the internal divisions within NNPP and the broader challenges faced by political parties in Nigeria. These disputes can impact party cohesion and influence the country’s political landscape, especially in the lead-up to elections.
