The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) successfully processed a backlog of nearly 60,000 passport applications in just four working days, according to Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior.
He made the announcement during a courtesy visit by Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
The backlog clearance was a response to a two-week ultimatum issued by the Minister of Interior to address the passport crisis, which had become an embarrassment. When the ultimatum was issued on September 6, 2023, there were over 200,000 passport application backlogs. The successful clearance of 59,906 cases demonstrates significant progress.

During the visit, Edu highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to address various issues, including human trafficking, veterans’ welfare, underemployment, and poverty. She emphasized the critical role the Ministry of Interior plays in addressing human trafficking concerns, given its supervisory role within the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The Minister of Interior assured Edu of his full cooperation, emphasizing the importance of partnership in advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s #RenewedHope Agenda and addressing the nation’s challenges.
This swift clearance of passport application backlogs is a significant achievement by the Nigeria Immigration Service, improving service delivery and addressing a longstanding issue.
