The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has introduced a self-service solution that enables Nigerians to register for their National Identification Number (NIN) from the convenience of their homes using a smartphone app.
This platform was launched during the 5th Identity Day celebration, jointly organized by the NIMC and the Ministry of Interior in Abuja.
Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Acting Director-General and CEO of the NIMC, highlighted the significance of identity in the country and emphasized the need to prioritize privacy and data protection in identity systems.

The new self-service solution aims to reduce registration turnaround time, making the process more accessible and efficient for Nigerians. It is expected to enhance identity management, combat insecurity, and provide support to citizens.
Additionally, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the government’s plans to harmonize all identity data sources, including the Bank Verification Number (BVN), telecom operators, voters’ identification, and NIN data, to create a comprehensive national identity database.
The NIMC’s self-service enrollment system is developed in partnership with Banksforte Technology Limited, and while it was launched, the application is not yet available for download.
This new self-service solution represents a significant step in simplifying the NIN registration process for Nigerians, reducing the need for in-person visits to NIMC offices or partner-agent locations, and allowing for certain modifications to personal information.
