Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, shared an exciting update regarding Nigeria’s passport application process. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he revealed that the automation of the country’s passport application is nearing completion, marking a pivotal leap toward digitalization.
Tunji-Ojo noted that the automated system, about 99% completed, will soon be operational, reducing the need for physical visits to immigration centers. The minister highlighted that after this final phase, Nigerians will only be required to visit these centers for fingerprint biometrics during their passport application process.
He stressed the ease that this technology would provide, stating that people could easily submit passport photos and other relevant documents from their homes before visiting the centers.

Tunji-Ojo, on the other hand, noted that, despite the system’s availability a few weeks ago, he spotted certain anomalies during the presentation, highlighting the need of maintaining a balance between national security and convenience, justifying a brief delay for rectifications.
Aside from this ground-breaking update, the minister also revealed intentions to install e-gate systems at Nigeria’s international airports by February 2024. He explained that once installed, these e-gates will ease admission for Nigerians, reducing the need for engagement with immigration personnel until a person of interest is detected.
This effort toward digitizing passport applications and streamlining airport entrance procedures is a significant step forward in Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing technology for enhanced efficiency and security in travel and documentation operations.
