Laolu Akande, former aide to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has voiced his concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its failure to electronically transmit the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections.
He believes that this failure has significantly eroded the trust that Nigerians have in the electoral agency.

In the lead-up to the February 2023 elections, INEC had repeatedly assured the public that it would electronically transmit polling unit results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV). However, this did not occur during the presidential and National Assembly polls. Despite public criticism, the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) ruled that INEC has the discretion to determine how to transmit election results.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Akande emphasized that INEC’s inability to fulfill its own guidelines has diminished the trust that the Nigerian people had placed in the commission. He pointed out that INEC had set certain standards and made commitments to the citizens, which it ultimately failed to meet.
This situation, according to Akande, not only affects INEC’s credibility but also raises questions about the legitimacy of those declared as winners in the elections. The loss of public trust in INEC has led to increased cynicism and skepticism regarding election outcomes.
This issue calls for renewed efforts to restore public trust in the electoral process and the institutions responsible for conducting elections in Nigeria.
