In a bid to ensure peace and security in the South East region of Nigeria, troops from the 302 Regiment under the 82 Division conducted clearance operations that led to the destruction of camps belonging to fighters of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Anambra West Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State.
According to a statement by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, the raid was carried out in collaboration with the Anambra Vigilante group in the communities of Oroma and Umuewelum Anam.
The operation, which took place on July 23, 2023, aimed to curb the illicit activities of the fighters in the area. As a result of the successful raid, the troops were able to recover one AK 47 Rifle, one AKMS Rifle, three Lexus SUVs, and two motorcycles. Additionally, eight brigands were arrested during the operation.

In a separate operation, the troops also targeted an IPOB camp at Mmiata Anam in Anambra South. However, during this encounter, the troops faced resistance from the group and had to engage in a firefight. As a result, one IPOB fighter was neutralized, and another was captured alive. The troops were able to recover one AK 47 Rifle, one Dane gun, and Police uniforms from the camp.
The Nigerian Army, in its statement, called on all law-abiding citizens, especially the people of the South East, to continue supporting and cooperating with the troops and other security agencies in their efforts to address the security challenges plaguing the region.
The recent operations demonstrate the commitment of the Nigerian security forces to maintain peace and curb illegal activities in the South East. The destruction of the IPOB and ESN camps is seen as a significant step in restoring security and stability to the affected areas. However, the situation remains dynamic, and ongoing support and cooperation from the community will be vital in achieving lasting peace in the region.
