In response to rising concerns about the use of vehicles with tinted glass in the commission of crimes, the Nigerian police have announced plans to reintroduce permits for vehicles with tinted windows nationwide.
This decision comes in light of growing criminal activities carried out by individuals using such vehicles, particularly among young people.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the police’s intention during an interview. He revealed that several states have reported cases of crimes committed using vehicles with tinted glass. A committee established by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is currently reviewing the matter and is expected to submit its recommendations soon.

The suspension of tinted glass permits was initially announced on March 20, 2022, by the police authorities under the former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba. Although the issuance of permits was suspended, police officers were still authorized to stop and search vehicles with tinted glass. However, they were instructed not to demand the permit from vehicle owners.
Many Nigerians welcomed the suspension of tinted glass permits, as it reduced the harassment they often faced from law enforcement officers. Despite this, Adejobi emphasized that the permit is being reconsidered to enhance crime prevention efforts across the country.
Adejobi stated, “The Inspector-General of Police has set up a committee to review it. We are going back to it because it is a matter of law. There is no way we will neglect such a thing. Many youths have started using tinted glass to commit crimes, and various states are complaining. So, we need to look into it and make a decision.”
He added that the committee would also address issues related to covered number plates, revolving lights, unregistered vehicles, and the use of vehicle logos in place of number plates.
The police are committed to working with private security companies to regulate police escorts for individuals, ensuring that those entitled to such protection receive it according to statutory provisions. The force aims to streamline the deployment of police officers and curb abuse of police escorts.
