The Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, has declared the elevation of Lt. Col. Abubakar-Surajo Imam to the esteemed rank of Professor in Mechatronics Engineering, marking the first instance of a serving personnel achieving this rank within the Nigerian Army’s history.
Brig.-Gen. A.M. Tukur, the Registrar of the Academy, formally disclosed this promotion in a statement issued on Friday in Kaduna. The promotion, sanctioned during the NDA Council Meeting in September, was effective from October 1, 2023.
Highlighting Lt. Col. Imam’s contributions, Brig.-Gen. Tukur conveyed that the decision by the council was a testament to Imam’s exceptional dedication and impact within the Department of Mechatronics Engineering at the Academy. He commended Imam’s exemplary service, underscoring his commitment to upholding excellence in his field.

“This recognition not only honors Professor Imam but also underscores the Nigerian Defence Academy’s commitment to acknowledging and rewarding outstanding contributions within its academic community,” added Tukur.
Expressing congratulations on behalf of the Academy’s Commandant and staff, Tukur emphasized the expectation for Imam to sustain his commitment and dedication.
Imam, originally from Kankia in Katsina State, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bayero University, Kano State, a Master’s Degree in Mechatronics from Newcastle University, United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Mechatronics and Robotics from the same university.
