The Nigerian Army, in a joint operation with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Tantita Security, has successfully uncovered a significant illegal oil refining site in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
This operation comes as part of the ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and protect the country’s crucial oil sector from economic sabotage.
The breakthrough was reported on the official Twitter handle of the Nigerian Army, @HQNigerianArmy, on July 30, 2023. According to the tweet, troops of the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the Nigerian Army, operating in the 6 Division Area of Responsibility, collaborated with the security agencies and carried out a sting operation based on a surveillance report about the illicit activities of illegal oil refiners in the area.

Upon reaching the location at Owahwa community, the vigilant troops discovered a staggering array of equipment used for illegal oil refining. The seized items included 35 Modular Ovens, which are commonly utilized in crude oil refining operations, as well as 3 fabricated reservoirs, 30 dug-out reservoirs, and 75 galvanized pipes.
The combined team of anti-oil theft operatives swiftly clamped down on the illegal refining site, effectively disrupting the nefarious activities of the oil thieves.
In a bid to further curb such criminal operations, the Nigerian Army is urging citizens to play their part in the fight against oil theft by promptly reporting any suspected illicit oil refining and bunkering activities in their communities to the security agencies.
