The Nigerian Army has issued a comprehensive response to allegations made by Sahara Reporters, an online media outlet, regarding the resignation of 25 soldiers and their alleged links to corruption within the army.
The official response was posted on the Nigerian Army’s Twitter account, @HQNigerianArmy, and was authored by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations.
The response categorically refutes the claims made by Sahara Reporters, emphasizing that the soldiers’ resignations were based on the voluntary discharge policies established by the Nigerian Army.

The army clarified that its recruitment process is voluntary, with well-defined terms and conditions for discharge and retirement. It stressed that personnel have the right to voluntarily apply for discharge or retirement when they meet the stipulated criteria.
The army strongly criticized Sahara Reporters for attempting to dampen the morale of its dedicated and patriotic troops and engender disaffection within its ranks.
The response highlighted the lack of factual evidence to support the allegations of corruption and underscored Sahara Reporters’ history of publishing divisive and destabilizing content. The army denounced the report’s attempt to sow disunity and perpetuate a negative narrative about the Nigerian government and military.
The statement also highlighted the Nigerian Army’s commitment to creating a supportive work environment for its personnel. It emphasized efforts to improve operational capabilities, provide prompt payment of operational allowances, enhance medical support for wounded soldiers, and offer educational opportunities for the families of fallen heroes. The army also detailed ongoing initiatives to address issues such as overstay and battle fatigue among troops.
The response concluded by reiterating the Nigerian Army’s dedication to maintaining high standards of integrity, probity, and professionalism. It assured the public that the army, under the leadership of Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, remains committed to the welfare and motivation of its personnel and operational effectiveness, while also urging the public to disregard the allegations made in the publication by Sahara Reporters.
Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu signed off the response on August 10, 2023, firmly rejecting the allegations and reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s commitment to its personnel and the nation.
