Nigerian Anti-Corruption Community Mourns Passing of Former EFCC Chairman Lamorde

The Nigerian anti-corruption community is in mourning following the death of Ibrahim Lamorde, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Lamorde, a seasoned law enforcement official, was born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State. He began his career in the Nigerian Police Force in 1986, steadily rising through the ranks and serving in various capacities. In 2011, he was appointed Chairman of the EFCC, a position he held until 2015.

During his tenure at the EFCC, Lamorde gained notoriety for his steadfast opposition to corruption. Under his leadership, the commission successfully prosecuted several high-profile cases and recovered embezzled funds worth billions of naira. Notable achievements include the conviction of former governor James Ibori and the recovery of $1 billion from the looted Abacha estate. Lamorde also spearheaded investigations into major corruption cases such as the fuel subsidy scandal and the Halliburton bribery case.

After leaving the EFCC in 2015, Lamorde continued his service in the Nigerian Police Force, retiring as a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in 2021. His career was marked by significant contributions to law enforcement and the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
