Niger will defend its territory against military invasion, but doesn’t want war, says Coup leader

Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the group responsible for the recent mutiny that took control of Niger Republic, has conveyed his country’s strong determination to avoid war while being prepared to defend its territory against any form of military invasion.

Amid regional instability and international pressure, Tchiani has underscored Niger’s commitment to peace and readiness to counteract any signs of conflict.

Tchiani emphasized that both the Nigerien army and its citizens are united in their desire for peace and are resolute in resisting any indicators of potential conflict.

He also highlighted that neighbouring states within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are not fully informed about Niger’s vital role in upholding regional stability, particularly in the face of escalating terrorist threats.

The coup, which occurred on July 26, led to the ousting of President Bazoum and brought Tchiani to power. In response to the coup, ECOWAS implemented sanctions, including the suspension of aid, asset freezes, and flight restrictions to Niger. Tchiani has voiced criticism of these sanctions, suggesting that they aim to pressure the rebels rather than contribute to a meaningful resolution.

Tchiani asserted that the rebels are committed to finding a solution that aligns with the interests of Niger’s population. He conveyed his willingness to engage in dialogue and negotiations to navigate the nation toward a stable and peaceful future.

Amidst the evolving situation, an ECOWAS delegation visited the capital to assess the detained former President and engaged in talks with Tchiani. In August, ECOWAS leaders collectively agreed to the potential mobilization of a force to restore Bazoum to power, with plans for military intervention in place, though specifics have not been publicly disclosed.

Niger stands at a crossroads, balancing the desire for stability and peace against the backdrop of international pressure and regional tensions. Gen.
