The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declined the three-year transition proposal presented by Niger Republic’s military junta.
General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the coup leader, assured ECOWAS that the military government would restore democracy to Niger Republic within three years during a meeting in Niamey.
However, ECOWAS Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah stated in a recent BBC interview that this proposition was unacceptable to the organization, potentially leading to a military intervention.

Despite ECOWAS’ stance, a significant number of Nigeriens took to the streets to express their support for the military junta.
These demonstrations coincide with ECOWAS’ readiness to intervene militarily if diplomatic efforts fail to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The recent rally also coincided with a meeting between ECOWAS and the junta, which reportedly achieved limited results, further indicating divisions within the presidential guard.
In a televised address, General Abdourahamane Tchiani emphasized his intention to restore civilian rule within a three-year transition period.
Pope Francis urged a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing political crisis, while protesters expressed their opposition to military intervention and sanctions imposed by ECOWAS.
Despite an official ban on demonstrations by the new military leadership, those supporting the coup were allowed to protest.
The demonstrators displayed placards rejecting military intervention and sanctions, accompanied by music praising the new regime. This demonstration follows a warning from the military ruler that an attack on Niger would not be an easy endeavour.
