NSUKKA —A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) named Equity Watch Initiative (E-WIN) , has condemned the chopping off of the wrist of Chinonso Echege, by her husband, identified as Sunday.
Recall that Sunday Echege, 33, severed the wrist of his wife, Chinonso, over suspicion that she is having extramarital affairs with another lover.
The incident happened at Ibagwa Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State on Sunday, January 26th, 2025.
The organization through its Executive Director, Associate Prof. Chiemezie Atama, in statement at the University town of Nsukka, Enugu State on Thursday, described the act as barbaric and urged the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the victim gets speedy justice.
Associate Prof. Atama, further expressed concern over the rising rate of gender-based violence in the society, urging couples to resort to dialogue in solving their misunderstandings at homes.
She equally called on the general public to join the fight against gender-based violence.
“It is worrisome that this incident happened barely a few days after the death of Mrs Chioma Nwaka, the late wife of Sunday Obiozor Nwaka, who died on 22 January, 2025 after she was doused with fuel and set alight by her husband in Abagana, Anambra state.”
She further said that the increase in domestic violence maybe attributed to obnoxious government policies which have plunged the citizenry into abject poverty.
The Director further called on government at all levels to initiate interventionist programmes to salvage the harsh economic realities being faced by families.
The statement also enjoined women to speak up and not die in silence over domestic issues or other matters threatening their lives.
The E-WIN Director also emphasized the need to train community actors on Gender Based Violence, GBV emergency response and called on development partners particularly, United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA Nigeria to partner with grass root organizations in this regard.
“The reality of violence against women and girls diminishes us all. But the movement to end it inspires us all. We should not doubt for a moment that we will see a world free of violence for women and girls and indeed everyone. And we will not stop until we have delivered the change that women and girls demand, expect, and deserve,” she said while talking about the activities of her NGO including Empowerment Self Defense (ESD) and their By-stander interventions.
E-WIN is located in Nsukka Enugu State and has the commitment in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls.
You are doing a good job Equity watch initiative.
It is totally barbaric. I equally urge any female gender in violent marriages to resort in leaving the marriage when issues that will heat up and result in these barbaric violence arises, instead of enduring and perpetually dying in silence. ‘Onye di ndu luru di na nwunye’
