The state legislature has been adjourned till further notice by Edison Ehie, the newly appointed Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. This decision was made in reaction to the Parliamentary Association of Nigeria’s notice of an indefinite strike, which was served from Abuja and prevented any more sittings.
Following a brief plenary meeting in a room inside Government House in Port Harcourt, Edison spoke to reporters. He emphasized that any assembly meeting would be deemed unlawful because of the strike action and advised anybody who felt wronged to take their grievances to court.
The state governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, was the target of an impeachment effort by certain lawmakers, which led to the recent crisis in the parliament and the adjournment. The legislative chamber was set on fire as a result of the escalating tension.
