The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued an advisory to prepaid meter users, urging them to update their meters before November 2024.
NERC shared this information through its official X handle (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
The electricity regulatory commission clarified that the update process is entirely free of charge and assured users that it would not impact the existing prepaid units on their meters. The update is being introduced to enhance the functionality and efficiency of the prepaid meters.

NERC has encouraged prepaid meter users to reach out to their respective Distribution Companies (DisCos) for further information and guidance regarding the update process. DisCos will provide detailed instructions on how to carry out the update, ensuring that users can seamlessly transition to the new system.
The statement from NERC emphasized the importance of the update, stating, “If you have a prepaid meter, it may be time for an update. From November 2024, you may not be able to recharge your meter. However, updating is easy and free. DisCos shall commence issuance of two free Key Change Tokens (KCTs) which will update your meter.”
NERC assured users that the update will not impact the current prepaid units stored on their meters, and it will not cause the meters to run faster than usual. The goal of this initiative is to improve the metering system and enhance the overall consumer experience with prepaid meters.
In light of this update requirement, prepaid meter users are advised to proactively contact their respective DisCos to receive clear instructions and support for the update process. By completing the update before the specified deadline, users can continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to electricity services while benefiting from the enhanced functionality of the updated meters.
