During a presentation at the Government House in Enugu, Ngozi Echeazu, the Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, highlighted that the intervention was not compensation but a fulfillment of the federal government’s responsibility to support citizens, especially when state and local authorities face overwhelming challenges.
NEMA conducted assessments in major local government areas to determine the extent of damage and needs, subsequently making recommendations to provide necessary short, medium, and long-term support.
The relief items, which include both essential and livelihood-related supplies, are intended to help affected individuals regain their footing and return to normalcy. The Zonal Coordinator emphasized the need for collective efforts in disaster management, urging proper waste disposal and avoidance of flood-prone areas.
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, expressed gratitude for the partnership between the state government and NEMA, emphasizing the positive outcomes of their collaboration. He acknowledged NEMA’s data contribution to the state’s planning and underscored the importance of the support in rebuilding the economic foundations of the victims.
The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Enugu State Chapter, under the leadership of Hon. Okechukwu Sydney Edeh, will oversee the distribution of the relief materials. The committee responsible for distribution will comprise stakeholders and priests who will reach out to affected communities, ensuring transparency and accountability.
The assortment of relief items includes food staples like rice, beans, and garri, as well as cooking oil, seasoning, and toiletries. Additionally, non-food items such as mosquito nets, blankets, and building materials will be provided to assist with rebuilding efforts.
The joint efforts of the Enugu State Government and NEMA stand as a testament to their commitment to aiding those impacted by natural disasters and ensuring their recovery and restoration.
