Nigerian Senator, Ned Nwoko has called for reparations amounting to $5 trillion from Britain and other colonial powers.
This request comes in response to historical injustices such as slavery, inhumane treatment, and the exploitation of Africans and their resources.
Senator Nwoko, representing Delta North senatorial district in the National Assembly, also emphasized the need for an apology to African people from the colonial powers.

He explained, “My aim is to seek reparations of at least $5 trillion, not as a form of revenge, but as a means of healing and restoration. We must establish a comprehensive framework to assess the extensive damages caused by centuries of injustice.”
Furthermore, Senator Nwoko urged former colonial powers and the international community to recognize the severe impact of these historical wrongdoings, especially on African nations like Nigeria, and to explicitly apologize to the affected countries and peoples.
He emphasized that it is insufficient for colonial powers to issue general statements to ease their conscience.
Instead, he said they should address the specific atrocities inflicted on diverse African communities and implement appropriate reparations based on the harm inflicted upon each African territory and its people.
Senator Nwoko also stressed the importance of re-evaluating and modifying the dynamics of the relationship between colonial powers and African territories that continue to grapple with the enduring effects of past atrocities.
He appealed to former colonial powers to invest in crucial areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic empowerment within African nations, particularly those that have suffered exploitation.
Additionally, Senator Nwoko highlighted the necessity of returning culturally significant artifacts that were taken from the African continent during the colonial era.
He challenged derogatory terminology that oversimplifies the diversity of Africa and urged the use of respectful and accurate descriptors, advocating for referring to people from Africa as Africans.
