As the New Year approaches, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in intercepting drug consignments and apprehending multiple individuals, including a Qatar-based businessman, Agu Evidence Amobi, and another person, Uchegbu Onyebuchi Obi. The statement was issued and signed by Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media & Advocacy at NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja on Sunday, December 31st, 2023.
Amobi, who professed a decade-long residency in Doha, Qatar, was found at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos carrying 1.30kg of concealed cannabis sativa. He claimed the substance, acquired in Enugu, was intended for delivery to Doha to manage personal expenses like rent and school fees for his children.
Simultaneously, Obi was taken into custody after attempting to ship 72,000 pills of tramadol 225mg to Kano on a local flight.

NDLEA’s operations spanned several states, with officers intercepting trucks in Yobe loaded with cannabis sativa and opioids, leading to multiple arrests. Follow-up operations resulted in the apprehension of individuals linked to the drug consignment.
Similar operations in Imo and Kano resulted in the seizure of codeine syrup, opioids, cannabis blocks, and compressed cannabis. Some suspects apprehended in Kano were allegedly involved in supplying drugs to bandits in Kebbi and Zamfara states.
Apart from intercepting drug shipments, NDLEA commands undertook advocacy campaigns against drug abuse. These initiatives involved lectures and advocacy programs targeting schools, markets, worship centers, and communities.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, lauded the agency’s efforts while urging continued vigilance in combating drug cartels and intensifying advocacy campaigns in the coming year. He extended New Year wishes to agency personnel, their families, stakeholders, and the public.
