The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly announced a nationwide strike set to commence on October 3, 2023.
This decision comes as a response to what the labour unions perceive as the government’s failure to effectively implement policies to mitigate the hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.
During a virtual National Executive Council meeting held on Zoom, NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, disclosed that discussions had been held with TUC officials to deliberate on the way forward. The consensus reached was for both labor centers to collaborate in making their grievances known to the government.

While some NLC members initially had reservations about working with TUC, the prevailing sentiment is that the government has not demonstrated proactive measures to address the issues at hand, making a nationwide strike a necessary action.
The 21-day ultimatum previously issued by NLC ended last week, and President Ajaero had expressed dissatisfaction, stating that none of the demands presented to the Federal Government had been met. This strike follows a two-day nationwide warning strike conducted on September 5 and 6 to demonstrate the unions’ readiness for an indefinite strike.
Key demands put forth by NLC and TUC include wage awards, implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions and allowances for public sector workers, and a review of the minimum wage. President Bola Tinubu had previously established the Presidential Steering Committee and various sub-committees to discuss a framework for palliatives. Despite a commitment from the Federal Government to restructure the framework, the eight-week timeframe set for the conclusion of this process expired in August without any action taken, leading to frustration among NLC and TUC leadership.
