Minister of Sports Takes Charge: Shifts Office to MKO Abiola National Stadium

In a significant move aimed at hands-on leadership and enhanced oversight, the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has relocated his office to the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The decision, according to Enoh, is driven by his commitment to closely monitor activities at the sports center and ensure that everything is in its rightful place.

During a tour of the MKO Abiola Stadium, Enoh made the determination to have his office situated at the stadium itself, rather than at the ministry’s Secretariat.

He explained the rationale behind this decision, emphasizing the importance of direct involvement and supervision in the sports sector.

Enoh stated, “I have taken that decision already; I have an assignment to make the ministry work, and we have to make it work. MKO Abiola Stadium is where we have 90 percent of the departments of sports.

The stadium is where we have all the federations’ secretariats, athletes, and footballers. For the purpose of coordination and to keep a watchful eye, it is imperative that my office is at the stadium.”

He expressed his willingness to face any challenges that might arise from this move, highlighting that the primary concern is the advancement of the sports sector. Enoh has also issued a memo to the permanent secretary, directing that the remaining sports departments be relocated to the stadium.

Enoh’s focus as the Minister of Sports Development encompasses two key areas. Firstly, he emphasizes the development of sports, particularly at the grassroots level, and the improvement of infrastructure and amenities in these areas where raw talents are abundant.

He envisions talents from diverse backgrounds, like Ajegunle, evolving into elite sportsmen and women.

He intends to provide necessary facilities, such as basketball courts in underserved regions, recognizing that great athletes often emerge from local environments with fewer opportunities. His goal is not merely to state these intentions but to deliver tangible results during his tenure, with a strong emphasis on social inclusion that translates into meaningful sports development.

In addition to the relocation of his office, Enoh has been actively assessing the state of major sports facilities across the country. During an inspection of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, he toured various facilities, including the National Institute of Sports, the boxing complex, the main bowl of the stadium, the sports medical center, indoor sports halls, and more. This hands-on approach underscores Enoh’s commitment to revitalizing the sports sector and elevating its impact on the nation’s development.
