The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, on Tuesday, inducted 52 graduands of the Enugu State University College of Medicine, ESUCOM, into medical profession.
While performing the ceremony at the ESUCOM Auditorium, the Registrar of the MDCN, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, urged the inductees to think of what they could give back to ESUCOM for giving them quality medical training.
He also cautioned them against ‘japa syndrome’ which is the emigration to foreign countries for practice, adding that it would impact negatively on the Nigerian health sector.

He further said that western universities were sustained by the supports of alumni associations and urged the graduands not to abandon their Alma Mater.
He equally stressed the need to speed up the processes leading to the functioning of the colliery hospital in order to enhance adequate training of the students.
“Enugu State had invested so much in you, and expect so much from you in return.
“If your teachers decide to ‘japa,’ who would have trained you? This is one reason why you need to sit back and dedicate yourself to the service of humanity.
“If it is money you are looking for, you are in a wrong profession because as a medical doctor, you won’t be highly rich, but you will not be poor either,” he said.
Earlier in his address, the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Mbah, while congratulating the graduands, urged them to eschew unnecessary politics and uphold the ethical standards of the medical profession.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, pledged the commitment of the state government in enhancing education and research in the state, adding that government would provide WI-FI services at the College to enhance internet connectivity and scholarship.
He also reiterated the commitment of the state government in ensuring the provision of pipe borne water in the state.
In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor, ESUT, Professor, Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, while congratulating the graduands, said that the University was open for collaborations and partnerships with private sectors.
He appreciated the state government, and the MDCN for their supports to the Institution, adding that the admission quota for Medicine and Surgery, and that of Medical Laboratory Science Departments increased due to the cooperation of the Registrar of the MDCN, Dr. Sanusi, and Dr. Torsan Irhabor of the MLSCN.
He used the occasion to announce that Management has commenced work on the remodeling and re-roofing of four faculty buildings at the main campus of the University at Agbani.
He equally announced that the next convocation of the University would hold on November 18, 2023, urging the graduands to join hands in the infrastructure upgrade of the University.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Provost of ESUCOM, Prof. Frank Ezugwu, while congratulating the graduands, said that it was remarkable that state government officially visited the University since the inception of the new administration in the state.
Prof. Ezugwu who equally announced that the induction ceremony was his last official function as the Provost of the ESUCOM, said that he was proud of the products of the College as they had continued to distinguish themselves in excellence globally.
He outlined the landmark achievements of the College to include: successful re-accreditation of Medical and Surgery programme which had expired since 2015 and increase in its admission quota; re-accreditation of Medical Laboratory Sciences programme and significant increase in its admission quota.
Other achievements outlined by the Provost include: establishment of post-graduate programmes in Pharmacology, Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, Neurosciences and Biochemistry.
He further said that the state government has allocated a site with a building for the zonal office of the MDCN, adding that the College has equally produced 14 homegrown professors between 2012 and 2023.
The Provost further noted that three lecturers in the College had produced patents presently in use by relevant professional bodies for training and research in medicine.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji, urged the graduands to combine their medical expertise with soft skills while treating patients.
Prof. Onyeji, who was a former Vice Chancellor of ESUT, also enjoined the graduands to be good ambassadors of their Institution by avoiding unethical practices.
In his keynote presentation on the topic ‘The Discipline of Medicine,’ the Dean, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Prof. Robsam Ohayi, told the graduands that good medical practice requires constant search for knowledge.
He further said that clinical diagnosis is an art which its mastery is unending, urging the graduands not to divulge health information given to them in confidence by patients.
This induction was for the 12th batch of the ESUCOM medical graduands.
