Fifty members of the Nigerian House of Representatives have urged President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The lawmakers, representing various regions and political parties, called for this action in a letter dated June 19, 2024, citing Section 174 of the Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
The group, known as Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East, emphasized that Kanu’s release would address the root causes of unrest in the southeast and promote inclusivity and peace. They requested that President Tinubu instruct the Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to end Kanu’s trial and secure his release.
