Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos convicts and sentences Hakeem Ayotunde Olanrewaju to two years in prison for identity theft and impersonation.
Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has handed down a two-year prison sentence to Hakeem Ayotunde Olanrewaju.
Olanrewaju had been arraigned on a one-count charge related to identity theft and impersonation, to which he pleaded “guilty.” This offense is in contravention of Section 22(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2015.

During the recent arraignment, Olanrewaju admitted to the offense. Subsequently, the prosecution counsel, Babatunde Sonoiki, presented the case’s facts, called a witness, and submitted documents as evidence to support the defendant’s guilt.
On August 15, 2023, Justice Oweibo delivered his verdict, finding Olanrewaju guilty and imposing a two-year prison sentence. Additionally, the judge provided an option for the defendant to pay a fine of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira).
Furthermore, the court ordered the forfeiture of $22,000 (Twenty-Two Thousand US Dollars) and a N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) Manager’s cheque, which had been recovered from the convict, to the victim. The mobile devices and gadgets seized from Olanrewaju were also forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
