Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has voiced his deep concern over the persistent presence of touts and extortionists at Nigeria’s international airports.
In a post on the social media platform X, Keyamo highlighted the negative impact these activities have on the country’s reputation, citing numerous complaints from the public.
“I have received multiple complaints about the threat of begging and extortion at our international airports by a few dishonest individuals who paint us all in a negative light,” Keyamo stated.

He acknowledged that while many of the agencies implicated do not fall under the Aviation Ministry’s jurisdiction, efforts are underway in collaboration with other government bodies to address the issue.
Keyamo assured that concrete steps would soon be announced to curb this “ugly tide,” emphasizing the coordination efforts led by the National Security Adviser. His remarks came shortly after the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) established a task force to combat the growing problem.
FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku announced the formation of the task force, headed by Mr. Henry Agbebire, Director of Special Duties. Kuku expressed concern over the ongoing intimidation and extortion at the airports and detailed measures being put in place, including dedicated phone lines, QR codes for passenger feedback, and mandatory name tags and on-duty cards for airport staff.
FAAN aims to ensure a safe, secure, and pleasant experience for all travelers and airport users, in line with its mission to provide outstanding service.
