Keyamo Defends Integrity of Nigerian Judiciary Amid Accusations of Blackmail

Prominent Nigerian lawyer, Festus Keyamo, SAN, took to his Twitter handle to express his concerns over what he perceives as a growing trend of baseless accusations against the judiciary and judicial officers.

In a strongly-worded statement, Keyamo defended the integrity of the revered institution and condemned attempts to use concocted stories as a means to blackmail and manipulate judicial processes for parochial interests.

Keyamo’s tweet reads: “It’s now one day, one concocted story against the judiciary and judicial officers, all in a bid to blackmail that revered institution to do some parochial bidding. Never in our history has the Supreme Court or the judicial arm of Govt been forced to be issuing denials every other day over silly allegations without any scintilla of evidence, mischievously conjured and released by some dysfunctional minds who support some dysfunctional politicians.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria highlighted the resilience of the Nigerian judiciary throughout the nation’s history. He emphasized that the judiciary has withstood the challenges posed by military regimes and dictatorial civilian regimes, including coups and counter-coups, where other institutions of state were decimated. Despite facing various threats, the judiciary has remained steadfast and courageous, refusing to succumb to intimidation or outside pressure.

Addressing those behind the alleged blackmail, Keyamo asserted that their efforts to smear the judiciary through social media will not influence court proceedings. He emphasized that justice in Nigeria will be dispensed according to the law and not in deference to online threats or attempts at intimidation.

Keyamo further criticized the anonymous “keyboard assassins and blackmailers,” some of whom he claims seek refuge abroad to pursue their nefarious trade. He cautioned them to take heed of the judiciary’s history and its unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law, stating that their actions will not sway the outcome of legal proceedings.
