Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has filed a new application seeking bail while awaiting the determination of the treasonable felony charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
Kanu’s lawyer, Mr. Alloy Ejimakor, submitted the motion for bail to trial Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In response to the fresh request for bail, the Federal Government has engaged Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, to lead the prosecution in the case. Awomolo confirmed to the court that he had received Kanu’s new bail application.

Kanu, who has been in detention since June 29, 2021, was previously granted bail on health grounds in 2017 but fled the country after an invasion of his residence. He was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 and brought back to Nigeria. On April 8, 2022, the trial court struck out eight of the 15-count charges against him, and the Court of Appeal ordered his immediate release. However, the Supreme Court later vacated the appellate court’s judgment, allowing the trial to proceed.
Kanu’s legal team continues to navigate the legal landscape, seeking his release on bail amidst ongoing legal proceedings. The case underscores the complexity and legal intricacies surrounding the charges brought against the IPOB leader.
