Kano State Government Revokes Private School Licenses, Initiates Reforms

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the quality and adherence to regulations within the education sector, the Kano State Government has taken the decision to revoke the operational licenses of all private schools operating within the state. This decision was reached following a comprehensive meeting held between state officials and private school proprietors on a recent Saturday.

Alhaji Baba Umar, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Private and Voluntary Institutions, conveyed the state government’s decision, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that private schools operate within the prescribed rules and regulations. As part of the reform process, private schools are now required to complete new registration forms promptly, as the government is in the process of issuing fresh certificates for their operation.

Umar highlighted the financial commitment expected from private school proprietors, stressing the necessity of paying the 10 per cent tax to the government. This financial contribution, according to Umar, contributes to advancements within the education sector and its overall development.

Underscoring the safety and well-being of students, Umar assured parents and stakeholders that the utmost priority is given to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment within private schools.

During the meeting, Alhaji Muhammad Adamu, Chairman of the National Association of Private Schools Owners in Kano State, lauded the government’s intervention, hailing it as a commendable step towards uplifting the local education sector. He urged private school proprietors to collaborate closely with the government in implementing the reforms, as these measures are designed to benefit all stakeholders involved.

To streamline and enhance the registration process, a newly designed software for comprehensive data collection of private and voluntary institutions across Kano was unveiled during the meeting. Additionally, registration forms for new school entries were distributed, aligning with the government’s commitment to improve and modernize the registration process.
