Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing, Once Africa’s Largest, Halts Operations in Akwa Ibom

Awa, Akwa Ibom’s renowned Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing (JSM) has shuttered its operations, marking the demise of what was once touted as Africa’s foremost syringe manufacturing venture.

The company’s closure was attributed to unforeseen challenges that significantly disrupted its business operations.

Established in 2017 and inaugurated with great pomp by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, JSM had earned its reputation as the continent’s largest syringe manufacturer. However, the company ceased production several months ago and, on December 31, 2023, officially declared the cessation of all its operations.

An internal memo, disseminated to the entire workforce and accessed by press sources, outlined the distressing news. Titled “Temporary Redundancy – Service Not Needed Till Further Notice,” the memo communicated the decision to place all positions, including yours, on temporary redundancy starting January 1, 2024.

In a heartfelt message, the memo conveyed the somber reality, attributing the move to ensure the company’s long-term sustainability amidst the prevailing unforeseen circumstances affecting its business landscape. It emphasized that this decision wasn’t a reflection of individual performances or dedication but rather a response to the daunting challenges that have beset the business.

The memo directed employees to return all company property in their possession, signaling a definitive end to their professional engagement with the company.
