Israel at War with Hamas as Gaza Militants Launch Surprise Attack

In a stunning turn of events, Hamas militants executed an unexpected and unprecedented attack on Israel, breaching the blockaded Gaza Strip and infiltrating nearby Israeli towns. The attack occurred during a major Jewish holiday, resulting in dozens of casualties and abductions.

Under the cover of a barrage of rockets, dozens of Hamas fighters made their way out of the Gaza Strip and entered Israeli territory. This daring assault left Israel in a state of shock, leading the nation to declare that it is now at war with Hamas. Israel swiftly launched airstrikes in Gaza, pledging to exact an “unprecedented price” in response.

As night fell, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza intensified, resulting in the destruction of several residential buildings, including a 14-story tower in central Gaza City that housed apartments and Hamas offices. A warning was issued before the strike, and no casualties were reported.

Shortly thereafter, Hamas launched a rocket barrage into central Israel, hitting four cities, including Tel Aviv and a nearby suburb. Two people were seriously injured in the suburb.

The audacity, sophistication, and timing of the Saturday morning attack took Israelis by surprise. Hamas fighters used explosives to breach the border fence surrounding the blockaded Gaza Strip and then crossed into Israel using motorcycles, pickup trucks, paragliders, and speed boats along the coast.

The streets of Israeli towns witnessed the aftermath, with the bodies of dead Israeli civilians and Hamas militants. Images from the Associated Press showed an elderly Israeli woman being brought back into Gaza on a golf cart by Hamas gunmen after her abduction, and another woman squeezed between two fighters on a motorcycle. Additional images depicted fighters parading captured Israeli military vehicles through the streets of Gaza.
