In a shocking turn of events, the Okigwe Correctional Service in Imo State fell victim to an attack believed to be orchestrated by the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the security arm of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The incident occurred at the Correctional Service’s farm settlement in Umualomoke, Okigwe, resulting in the death of a police inspector, the abduction of a correctional officer, and the escape of seven inmates.
According to Henry Okoye, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the assailants carried out the assault on the farm settlement, unleashing violence that saw the tragic demise of a police inspector, the kidnapping of a correctional officer, and the release of seven detainees.
Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, wasted no time in visiting the scene of the incident. Following his assessment, he promptly deployed the Command’s Special Tactical Squad to collaborate with the military and other security agencies in a bid to apprehend the suspected ESN members responsible for the assault. The primary objectives of the operation include rescuing the abducted officer, capturing the escaped inmates, and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
CP Danjuma urged the public to share any valuable information that could aid in the swift arrest of those involved in the attacks. He assured the residents of Imo State that the police force is unwavering in its commitment to ensuring their safety and has implemented robust security measures to prevent a recurrence.
The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s determination to shield the state from security threats and vowed to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the assaults on the Correctional Service farm settlement and the residence of Senator Patrick Ndubeze in Okigwe.
Citizens were encouraged to continue their daily activities without fear, as the police have intensified security measures to effectively address the situation.
As investigations unfold, the Imo State Police Command remains vigilant, dedicated to restoring order in the face of security challenges. Efforts are focused on capturing the suspects and ensuring the safe return of the abducted officer. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persisting security concerns in the region.
