IOM Raises Alarm Over Fake UK Job Promises to Nigerian Migrants

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has sounded a warning to potential Nigerian migrants seeking employment in the UK.

Highlighting a fraudulent scheme distributing counterfeit employment letters, the IOM revealed that over 260,000 Nigerians sought their guidance on migration last year.

Unfortunately, many fell victim to these false assurances, leaving them stranded in the UK. Some individuals reported losses of up to $10,000 and now face hurdles returning home due to financial constraints or feelings of shame attached to their situation.

Chief of Mission, Mr. Laurent De Boeck, shed light on the IOM’s ongoing efforts to repatriate those left stranded. Moreover, discussions are underway to create legitimate avenues for qualified Nigerians in collaboration with countries like Italy, Spain, Belgium, and France.

De Boeck also addressed escalating displacement challenges in Nigeria’s Northwest, where a 30% annual increase in displacement has occurred over the past five years. States like Zamfara have been severely affected by rising crime rates and banditry, while internal displacement in Kano has seen migration routes directed towards Libya and Niger.

Throughout 2023, the IOM stepped in to address the shelter needs of 71,666 individuals affected by conflicts and environmental hazards. Their assistance included emergency, transitional, and durable housing solutions. Additionally, the organization supported 682 trafficking victims, particularly focusing on vulnerable groups. Collaborating closely with Nigeria’s Federal Government, the IOM facilitated the return of 4,431 Nigerians, with 2,853 beneficiaries receiving support for reintegration through various socio-economic opportunities.

Beyond shelter and migration issues, the IOM conducted over 260,000 Pre-Departure Medical Health Assessments, identifying and referring 166 migrants diagnosed with TB. They also administered 15,000 vaccine doses and initiated refurbishment work on three public hospitals. These comprehensive actions reflect the IOM’s steadfast commitment to providing holistic support and healthcare services to migrants in need, showcasing their dedication to assisting and protecting migrants worldwide.
