In a press briefing held on Monday, Mr. Patrick Areghan, the Head of Nigeria Office at WAEC, shared the outcomes of the examination, highlighting the impressive achievements of the students.
Out of the 1,613,733 candidates who participated in the examination, a notable 84.38% secured credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects. This accomplishment indicates that these candidates achieved substantial success across various subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics. Furthermore, within this group, 79.81% of candidates obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including both English Language and Mathematics.

Mr. Areghan noted that within the cohort of candidates who obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, 47.9% were male candidates, while 52.1% were female candidates, showcasing a balanced representation between genders.
In comparison to the performance of candidates in the 2022 WASSCE, Mr. Areghan observed a 3.45% decrease in the proportion of candidates who secured credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. The 2022 results had shown a percentage of 76.36 in this category.
However, amid the positive outcomes, a total of 262,803 candidates had their results withheld due to suspected cases of examination malpractice. These withheld results account for 16.29% of the total number of candidates who participated in the examination. Mr. Areghan emphasized the commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process and ensuring fairness and credibility in the assessment of students’ performance.
The release of the 2023 WASSCE results underscores the significance of standardized testing in evaluating educational progress and guiding future improvements in the Nigerian education system. As candidates, educators, and stakeholders review the outcomes, the attention now shifts to understanding the areas of strength and identifying areas for growth in the pursuit of academic excellence.
