Wale Adedayo, the impeached chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area in Ogun State, has been arraigned before a magistrate court in Isabbo, Abeokuta, on charges related to unlawful publication and making false allegations of fund diversion against Governor Dapo Abiodun. Adedayo appeared before Justice A.K. Araba on two counts of the said offenses.
The prosecutor, Adeyemi Olukoya, informed the court that Adedayo’s actions contravened and were punishable under sections 59(1) and 375 of the criminal code laws of Ogun State, 2006. The charges stem from Adedayo’s publication of a circular in which he accused Governor Abiodun of hijacking local government funds, making false allegations that were likely to cause fear and alarm in the public or disturb public peace.
Adedayo pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the court granted him bail in the sum of N2 million. The bail requires two sureties who are considered “responsible and reliable” and who reside within the court’s jurisdiction. These sureties must possess landed property with tax clearance. The case was adjourned for further hearing to October 20, 2023.

The charges against Adedayo come after he accused Governor Abiodun of diverting the statutory Federal Allocation due to the state’s Local Governments over the past two years. In a letter addressed to former Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba on August 29, 2023, Adedayo also alleged the diversion of over N10.8 billion in funds from the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme by the governor. Governor Abiodun countered these allegations, denying any diversion of funds and stating that his administration had augmented the funds allocated to local governments in the state to help council chairmen meet their obligations.
