In response to numerous complaints from the public about high-handedness, extortion, and inappropriate behaviuor by police personnel, the Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has initiated a significant restructuring and strengthening of the IGP Monitoring Unit and the X-Squad within the Nigeria Police Force.
The aim is to enhance efficiency, accountability, and professionalism among police officers and address any excesses or improper conduct.
As part of the restructuring process, the IGP has directed the Commissioners of Police in charge of State Commands to establish Complaints Response Units (CRUs) in their respective commands. These CRUs will complement the efforts of the restructured IGP Monitoring Unit and X-Squad in ensuring better service delivery.
The reformed IGPMU and X-Squad will undergo comprehensive reforms, including the integration of advanced technologies and training to equip their personnel with the necessary tools for effective execution of their duties. Their primary responsibility will be to oversee and investigate complaints against police officers, ensuring that any misconduct or abuse of power is thoroughly addressed and reported to the IGP for immediate sanctions. The focus will be on curbing inappropriate behavior among police personnel, especially indiscriminate extortion of innocent citizens along the country’s highways.
The IGP emphasizes that the restructured units will function independently and impartially, committed to transparency and justice. They will also collaborate with other internal complaint units and external oversight bodies to foster accountability and maintain public trust in the police force. Members of the public are encouraged to send complaints and relevant information on police actions to the official email or phone number of the Unit, or via the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU).
In line with strategic efforts to improve security deployments and leadership, the IGP has ordered the posting of CP Bartholomew N. Onyeka to Benue State Police Command and CP Julius Alawari Okoro to head the Plateau State Police Command.
The Inspector General of Police urges all police officers to cooperate fully with the restructured units and other complaint sections, embracing the wind of change and paradigm shift towards upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.
The recent developments underscore the police force’s commitment to addressing issues of corruption, misconduct, and abuse of power, reaffirming their dedication to maintaining public trust and restoring faith in the institution.
