The traditional ruler of Edem Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, HRH, Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, on Tuesday, disclosed his intension to make the youths of his community employers of labour.
He equally said that he wants to engage the youths into productive Small and and Medium scales Enterprises, SMEs in order to minimize crimes and drug addictions to the barest minimum in his community.
He made the remarks after empowering 63 youths of his community with N1 million each to boost their businesses and skills, adding that his dream is to leapfrog the people of his community economically above other towns in Nsukka cultural zone.

“I am not too rich but I denied myself some earthly benefits to empower you as a demonstration of my genuine love for you. I am hopeful that in the next 10 years, there would be 63 millionaires in Edem Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom.
“You owe this community a duty to put this money into productive ventures so that you will empower others in turn,” the monarch said.
He appreciated the people of the community for their supports and for erecting his statue at the heart of the community as a demonstration of their love for him.
While speaking at the event, the President General of the community, Colonel Emeka Ugwuoke, thanked the traditional ruler, stating that the community has witnessed many infrastructural facelift since his emergence.
Ugwuoke who was represented by his Vice President, Grace Onyishi, urged the beneficiaries to be dedicated to their walks of life in order to bring more development to the community.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee of the Empowerment programme, Chief Ogbu Chidozie, explained that the beneficiaries were carefully and impartially selected from the hamlets in the community.
He further explained that the N1 million would not be given to the beneficiaries in cash but would be used to procure start up equipment for their SMEs based on their areas of specialisations.

He described the monarch as a pacesetter, adding that the committee would monitor and review the performances of the beneficiaries to ensure that the aim of the programme is not defeated.
Also in his reaction, the youth president of the community, Kenechukwu Omeje, while lauding the initiatives of HRH Igwe Asadu, described him as a jinx-breaker and a man of history.
He urged the beneficiaries to be diligent in their enterprises to make the community proud.
One of the beneficiaries, Perpetua Ezema, a graduate of Food Science and Technology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, said she had been unemployed since she left the university, adding that she ventured into selling of ceramic tiles but had been challenged by lack of capital.
