House of Reps Halts Demarcation Exercise Ceding Territory to Cameroon Amid Protests

The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on International Boundary Dispute has ordered the immediate halt of the demarcation exercise that would cede Sina Area in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State to the Republic of Cameroon.

The committee, led by Hon Beni Lar, made the ruling during a hearing on boundary hotspots along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. The move comes after protests from the community that claims the area as Nigerian territory.

The Director General of the National Boundary Commission, Adamu Adaji, argued that the demarcation exercise was being conducted in accordance with a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which upheld treaties and agreements between colonial masters as the basis for re-establishing the boundary. He noted that 2,214 pillars had been placed along the boundary so far.

However, the representative of Sina Area, Adamu Kamale, insisted that the disputed area was Nigerian territory and had not been considered in the demarcation process.

The committee decided to put the demarcation exercise on hold until the disputes were resolved and planned to visit Adamawa State to compile a comprehensive report on the matter. The international boundary dispute has become a contentious issue in Nigeria, with several communities disputing the demarcation process and raising concerns about ceding Nigerian territory to Cameroon.
