In a harrowing incident on Tuesday, unidentified gunmen launched a brazen attack that allegedly claimed the lives of at least eight security operatives in Imo State, Nigeria. The attackers also set two vehicles on fire during the assault.
The attack took place around 11:30 am in Oriagu, near the Aba branch within the Ehime Mbano council area of Imo State. The security personnel affected by the ambush included soldiers, policemen, and officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
An eyewitness at the scene described the horrifying event, stating that they witnessed the aftermath of the attack, including the sight of four lifeless soldiers in uniform, alongside their weapons. The attackers had also set fire to the soldiers’ two vehicles.

As of the time of reporting, the area leading to the scene of the incident had been cordoned off, with heightened tension both within and beyond the affected community.
The eyewitness shared, “The incident just happened about two hours ago. At first, I saw the two Hilux vehicles as they drove from Oriagu heading to the Aba branch in Ehime Mbano. As I am talking to you now, the Hilux vehicles are still on fire. The soldiers were burnt by the gunmen.”
Widespread fear gripped the area, with businesses closing and residents retreating to their homes. Roadblocks were established by security forces, as uncertainty prevailed.
The exact motive and identity of the assailants remain unclear at this stage. The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Henry Okoye, had not yet provided an official response or statement regarding the incident as of the time of this report. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
