Retired General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, has called on Nigerians to exercise patience and allow more time for the administration led by President Bola Tinubu to address the various challenges facing the nation.
The retired military officer made these remarks after a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
General Gowon acknowledged the criticisms faced by leaders in public office and highlighted that it is premature to expect the resolution of all inherited crises in the early stages of the administration. He urged Nigerians to be patient and allow President Tinubu the time needed to implement effective solutions.

“Well, I was telling him that no Nigerian leader that gets there will not have all the report of what is being said about him,” Gowon stated. “But certainly, there’s no doubt from what one hears and what one sees on the various media. I think the government is trying its best to deal with the various problems of the country.”
Gowon emphasized the need for citizens to give the President time, saying, “Don’t you worry, you will get criticised, but people who get there know better than you know. I think all what one can say is that Nigerians, we’ve got to give the President time to get things really done. And it is too early to say absolute result, perfect result will be achieved now.”
The retired general’s advice comes at a time when the Tinubu-led administration is facing various challenges, including economic issues, security concerns, and calls for structural reforms.
Additionally, the meeting between General Gowon and President Tinubu delved into the challenges facing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) subregion. Gowon, being one of the founding fathers of ECOWAS, stressed the importance of amicably settling the issues within the regional bloc.
“There was a miscommunication, but then, it gave the opportunity for the President to call me so that we can discuss what I was to do,” Gowon clarified regarding misinformation about his attendance at an ECOWAS event.
As the nation navigates through a complex web of challenges, General Gowon’s counsel for patience and understanding underscores the ongoing efforts by the Tinubu-led administration to address pressing issues and steer the nation toward stability and progress.
