He announced, “Let me tell you something: I have gone further to negotiate with the European Union companies and the Canadian companies. They are sending us areas of visible skills which our youth will also learn.” The governor then stirred the crowd to euphoria by declaring, “By December this year, 4,000 Imo youths will be employed in Europe.”
Governor Uzodinma’s promises did not stop there. He pledged to cover the cost of transportation to the chosen country for relocation once the individuals receive their employment offers. He said, “Once that letter comes, the governor will pay for your air ticket.”
The governor’s bold commitments have generated significant attention on X (formerly Twitter), with a range of responses from the public. While some have criticized the governor’s actions, accusing him of desperation to hold onto power, others are expressing disbelief and shock at the promise.
As the video of Governor Uzodinma’s announcement continues to circulate on social media, it has garnered over 500,000 views, making it a topic of considerable discussion on both social and mainstream media. The governor’s initiative to boost the economies of Europe and Canada by facilitating the relocation of young Nigerians from Imo State is sparking debate and controversy.
In the upcoming governorship election, Governor Uzodinma, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), will face competition from Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lincoln Ogunewe of Action Alliance (AA), and Senator Athan Achonu of the Labour Party. The promises made by the governor are expected to be a central point of discussion in the lead-up to the election.
