Gov. Obaseki Redeploys Deputy’s Sister-in-law Amidst Political Tension

In a recent development, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State reportedly made a significant redeployment within the state’s administrative structure.

The Permanent Secretary of the State Sports Commission, Mrs. Sabina Chikere, has been transferred to the Central Administration Department at the Government House in Benin City.

Mrs. Sabina Chikere, until her redeployment, held the position of General Coordinator of Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin, a team that is currently preparing for continental competition.

Interestingly, this transfer has caught the attention of political observers due to the ongoing power struggle between Governor Obaseki and his Deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu. The deputy governor is currently engaged in a political conflict with Governor Obaseki over the 2024 gubernatorial succession plans in the state.

Many observers speculate that the decision to redeploy Mrs. Chikere could be a result of the brewing tension between the governor and his deputy.

Furthermore, this move comes merely 24 hours before the crucial CAF Confederation Cup first-round preliminary match between Bendel Insurance and ASO Chief of Algeria, scheduled to take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin on Saturday.

Interestingly, Mrs. Sabina Chikere is the elder sister of the wife of Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade (Mrs.) Maryann Philip-Shaibu.

Her elevation to the position of Permanent Secretary was reportedly influenced by the embattled Deputy Governor. It is worth noting that Mrs. Chikere’s background is not rooted in the core civil service of Edo State.

The political feud between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has escalated to the point where the latter approached a Federal High Court in Abuja to seek an order restraining the governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the Chief Judge of Edo State, and others from initiating impeachment processes against him. This move seemingly angered Governor Obaseki, who strongly denied the allegations and accused his deputy of creating unnecessary turmoil.

Prior to this ongoing dispute, Governor Obaseki entrusted Comrade Philip Shaibu with the responsibility of overseeing the sports sector in the state.
