Nigeria’s telecommunications sector witnessed a public dispute between major players as Globacom Ltd. refuted claims of indebtedness to MTN for interconnect charges, asserting that the disputed N1.6 billion had been settled without issue.
Contrary to a public notice issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and circulated via its Twitter page on Monday, January 8th, indicating an impending partial disconnection of Globacom from MTN due to alleged unpaid interconnect charges, a reliable source within Globacom clarified to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the dues had been duly paid.
The NCC’s notice, signed by Director of Public Affairs Reuben Muoka, highlighted Globacom’s purported repeated failure to settle outstanding debts, citing regulatory provisions allowing partial disconnection in such instances. It outlined the directive that, after a specified period, Glo subscribers would lose the ability to make calls to MTN, while still being able to receive calls.
However, the Glo official rebuffed the claims, emphasizing that proper cross-checking of facts should have occurred before issuing such a notice. The official asserted that Globacom had cleared all interconnect charges owed to MTN, refuting any remaining financial obligations.

This public disagreement between telecommunications giants highlights the importance of accurate and verified information in the sector, underscoring the need for robust communication and adherence to regulatory directives. As conflicting narratives persist, stakeholders anticipate further clarification to resolve this high-profile dispute in Nigeria’s telecom landscape.
