In a daring and alarming incident, a group of approximately 30 gangsters launched a coordinated assault on the Neni Police Station and the Anaocha local government headquarters in Anambra State in the early hours of Thursday. The attackers, reportedly shouting slogans demanding the removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), unleashed chaos in the area, leaving residents in a state of shock and confusion.
The motives behind the attack remain unclear, although eyewitnesses recounted hearing the assailants chanting, “DPO must go; he has overstayed; he has been in Anaocha for over 15 years.” Despite this targeted call for the removal of the DPO, it remains uncertain why the local government office, situated in close proximity to the police station, was also subjected to the attack.

Initial reports suggested that the gangsters forcibly took some police operatives captive, including female personnel. However, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, refuted these claims, stating that no police personnel were abducted during the attack. Ikenga clarified that although the assailants utilized Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) during the assault, they did not manage to seize any firearms or detain police officers.

Despite the brazenness of the attack, law enforcement swiftly responded with superior firepower, successfully repelling the assailants and forcing them to retreat. Ikenga emphasized that police operations in the area continue uninterrupted, with authorities maintaining a vigilant stance to ensure the safety and security of residents.
The motives behind this audacious attack on the Neni Police Station and Anaocha local government headquarters remain a subject of speculation. However, the incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating criminal elements and maintaining public order in the region. As investigations unfold, authorities are expected to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and restore calm to the affected area.
