In a twist of events, Sierra Leone’s former president, Ernest Bai Koroma, has arrived in Nigeria for medical treatment as he faces charges linked to an alleged coup attempt.
The 70-year-old ex-leader, who governed Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, was granted permission by judicial authorities to spend up to three months in Nigeria for medical reasons.
Nigeria had extended a temporary entry offer to Koroma, which he accepted, and upon arrival in Abuja, he was greeted by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray. The move was characterized by Sierra Leone’s current President Julius Maada Bio as a “humanitarian gesture.”

Koroma, charged with offenses, including treason, is expected to undergo medical treatment during his stay in Nigeria.
The legal saga stems from a series of events in late November, where armed attackers targeted military and police facilities, leading to a coup attempt, according to authorities in Sierra Leone. The former president had been effectively under house arrest since early December before seeking medical attention in Nigeria. The situation has sparked significant attention and discussions in the West African region.
