Former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika found himself in the spotlight on Tuesday as he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with an alleged N8.06 billion money laundering case.
Sirika, who served as the Minister of Aviation, voluntarily presented himself at the EFCC’s Federal Capital Territory Command office in Abuja for questioning.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Sirika is being investigated for his involvement in allegedly fraudulent contracts awarded to a company called Engirios Nigeria Limited, owned by his younger sibling, Abubakar Sirika. These contracts, totaling N8.06 billion, are at the center of the EFCC’s probe into conspiracy, misuse of authority, contract inflation, and diversion of public funds during Sirika’s tenure as the Aviation Minister.

The investigation alleges that Sirika’s brother’s company was used as a conduit to carry out the fraudulent contracts, with no evidence of work being completed despite substantial payments. Abubakar Sirika, who is also in EFCC custody, has reportedly been cooperating with investigators and providing valuable information on the financial transactions related to the Aviation Ministry.
The contracts in question include the construction of the Katsina Airport Terminal Building, the Fire Truck Maintenance and Refurbishment Center at Katsina Airport, and the purchase of aircraft and simulator equipment for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, among others.
The EFCC’s investigation into Sirika’s alleged involvement in money laundering and other financial crimes underscores the agency’s commitment to combating corruption and holding public officials accountable for their actions. As the case unfolds, it is expected to shed light on the extent of corruption within Nigeria’s aviation sector and the broader implications for transparency and accountability in government.
