Florida Implements Ban on Social Media for Children Under 14

The State of Florida in the United States has taken a significant step in safeguarding the mental well-being of its youth by banning the use of social media by children under 14. Scheduled to be enforced from early 2025, this proactive measure aims to address the adverse effects of excessive social media consumption on the younger population.

Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill into law on Monday, March 25, underscoring the detrimental impact of social media platforms on children’s mental health. Citing alarming statistics, Governor DeSantis emphasized the correlation between prolonged social media usage and increased rates of depression and mental health issues among adolescents.

The legislation prohibits children under the age of 14 from creating social media accounts, recognizing the vulnerability of this age group to the negative effects of online platforms. Additionally, individuals aged 14 and 15 will require parental consent to access social media platforms, reinforcing parental oversight in their children’s online activities.
