Finidi George has resigned as coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria after just two games, both of which ended without a win. His departure follows a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic on matchday 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, leaving the Super Eagles winless in four matches.
Former Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, confirmed the news on his X account on Saturday. He wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
A source within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) also confirmed the development, stating that the federation is looking to hire a new manager and is considering reducing the head coach’s salary.

Finidi, 53, was appointed as coach of the Super Eagles in May, following the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro after the 2023 African Cup of Nations. In March, Finidi, formerly the coach of Enyimba, led the team in an interim capacity for international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.
With Nigeria’s qualification hopes in jeopardy, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau announced that the federation will take all necessary steps to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Gusau made this statement on Thursday in Abuja, following a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, to address Nigeria’s poor performance in the qualifiers.
Gusau assured that the NFF is working closely with the sports ministry and other stakeholders to develop a winning strategy for the Super Eagles. “It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football, but we are working tirelessly to come up with comprehensive measures to improve the system and move forward,” he said. “We are committed to fighting for our qualification and will soon implement major steps to achieve this goal
