The Federal Government is set to tackle the issue of flooding along the Abuja-Lokoja highway by constructing a flyover at the problematic Koton Karfe section.
The decision was announced by Minister of Works, David Umahi, during an inspection of ongoing construction works on the road, shortly after his assumption of office.
Umahi, accompanied by Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and ministry directors, visited various work sites on the Abuja-Lokoja road to assess the ongoing construction efforts.

Addressing the issue of flooding, Umahi highlighted the need for a lasting solution and proposed the construction of a flyover to elevate the road above flood levels. The planned flyover, spanning about 1.6 kilometers, aims to provide a more permanent solution to the flooding problem.
Umahi explained, “We have seen the area that always gets flooded at the Koton Karfe section, and the only solution to it is to do a flyover on it to fly above the flood level. That will really work because it is about 1.6 kilometers which will take five flyovers, you know, multiplied by two.
So we are going to be making a proposal and submit to Mr. President to give us his nod because we are looking for permanent solutions to our problems.”
Governor Bello of Kogi State also commended the minister for prioritizing this issue and choosing to visit the state for his first field assignment. Bello expressed gratitude for the Federal Government’s dedication to addressing the flooding challenges faced by the region.
Bello stated, “For Mr. President to deploy the Honourable Minister a day after swearing-in to come and look into this particular problem is commendable. I think we can’t ask for more.
The road is going to be designed in such a way that no matter the flooding that will ever come, our road will stand the test of time, and I thank you, sir.”
The planned flyover project aims to provide a more resilient and sustainable solution to the flooding issues along the Abuja-Lokoja highway, ensuring the safety and convenience of road users.
