During the May Day celebration in Abuja, State Labor Minister Nkeiruka Onyejeocha assured Nigerian laborers that the new minimum wage would take effect on May 1, 2024, despite ongoing negotiations by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.
Addressing the audience on Wednesday, Minister Onyejeocha acknowledged that extensive consultations are still underway to finalize the details of the new minimum wage. She expressed regret that the negotiations had not concluded before the designated date.
Labor unions, including the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress, have been urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to expedite the upward review of the wage award. Recently, organized labor proposed a new minimum wage of N615,000 to address the challenges posed by Nigeria’s high cost of living and prevailing economic conditions.

One of the primary concerns raised by labor unions is the non-compliance of some governors with the current wage award, which expired in April. The Minimum Wage Act of 2019, signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, stipulates a review of the minimum wage every five years to ensure its relevance in the evolving economic landscape.
As negotiations continue, the Federal Government remains committed to implementing the new minimum wage to improve the welfare of Nigerian workers. With the deadline set for May 1, 2024, laborers across the country can expect relief from the financial strains exacerbated by the current economic realities.
